Art Therapy at Holy Land Trust: Transforming Trauma into Hope
At Holy Land Trust (HLT), we do not approach art therapy as trauma healing. Instead, we believe in the power of art as a tool for overcoming trauma and transforming it into hope. Through creative expression, we provide children with a safe space to explore their talents, interests, and emotions. Our activities help children release anger and stress through playful engagement in dance, singing, drama, movement, and music.
We focus on children from vulnerable communities, those who face daily challenges and fears. Our programs are designed with specialized artists and supported by psychological coaches, ensuring that art is used under a trauma-informed approach. We view art as a means of transformation, helping children express and process their emotions while fostering resilience.
Beyond creating these safe spaces, we work directly with local artists, training them in trauma-informed practices so they can integrate these approaches into their work with children. We also organize seasonal activities, tailoring our programs to the needs of the community.
In addition to artists, we train social workers to use art as a tool in schools, ensuring that both educators and creative professionals can support children in meaningful ways. While we run our own core activities, our trained artists and social workers become key partners in implementing HLT’s trauma-informed approach.
Bet Lahem Live Festival is one of the key events where HLT has succeeded in building a powerful platform for local artists to showcase their work. By connecting them with international artists for potential collaboration or giving them the opportunity to participate, we ensure they gain visibility within the local community. The festival also opens space for over 120 handcraft makers to promote and market their products, turning desperation into hope and success for many.Â
In partnership with organizations like theEdward Said Conservatory for Music, we hold summer camps in Bethlehem where we work with kids through various forms of art, such as music, theater, painting, and dance. These camps help children express themselves and speak about their fears and challenges in highly creative ways. We believe art is one of the best methods for children to overcome their traumas and fears.
Holy Land Trust remains committed to organizing activities for children throughout the year, always rooted in the trauma-informed approach, to provide healing, empowerment, and hope through art.
